WW1 German helmet also known as the stahlhelm has became the most significant symbol of World War 1.
WW1 German helmet was the head covering worn by the military between the war periods of 1914 to 1918.
It had unique shape which had the coal bucket design and was the first thing recognizable in a soldier.
The stahlhelm was developed during the war.
It was crafted with a three pad leather lining fixed on a leather band.
WW1 German helmet had a leather chin belt attached to the permanent lugs placed inside the helmet next to each ear.
WW1 German Helmet: The Symbol of German Militarism
The preliminary Gaede WW1 German helmet was made of heavy steel.
The Gaede helmet was worn underneath with skull-cap of leather and cloth for comfort.
It did not guard the front of the head and for this reason another steel helmet was developed.
The steel helmet known as stahlhelm was developed in 1916, with the name M16 the year of development.
The Gaede helmets were then melted down.
The M16 WW1 German Helmet
The M16 had the side lugs for the frontal shield. The chin straps were outside of the helmet.
The M16 WW1 German helmet had the visor, dome and the neck guard. The visor extended out to provide shade and protect the wearer.
The dome was cylindrical in shape meant for the main head covering.
The neck guard provided more protection around the neck and ear area.
The M16 helmet had the strip of leather looped around two slide buckles. T
he straps were removable, therefore many were lost during the war period but there were always replacements available.
The helmet had pads folded within the dome of the helmet positioned at the fore head and against the two sides of the head for protection.
The side lugs which were the spindle bolts that did stick from each side were the air passages to the inside of the helmet to provide ventilation.
Most of them were greenish grey in color with a shinier appearance and harder finish.
M1917 and M1918 WW1 German Helmet
M1917 and M1918 were later developed representing an improved model.
The M16 strap lugs were falling off and could get lost. The improved M17 of 1917 had an adjusting hookup buckle that kept the chin strap at the correct position.
The other details did not change and only the strap connections and the strap were improved.
M1918 WW1 German Helmet had ear cut outs that could offer better hearing when riding or in trenches. WW1 German Helmet was indeed a defensive war weapon against the bullets.
